WOODLAWN RACING PIGEON CLUB ANNUAL ACTIVITIES

GREATER SAN ANTONIO FUTURITY Seventeenth Annual race -- The 2001 GSAF will be the seventeenth  year that WRPC has sponsored the futurity. GSAF has been an opportunity for flyers from throughout the United States to participate in our futurity as well as an opportunity for our members to make new friends and become acquainted with flyers all over the nation. This race has been structured several different ways in the past.

The price of bands has changed as well as the pay-out. We are always trying to find new ways to be successful with this race, stimulate continued interest, and meet the needs of the flyers. The cost of futurity bands ($25.00 each) and the 1st Place Prize ($3,000.00) has remained the same for the past several years. It has been a good way for members to meet pigeon flyers from all over the United States. WRPC members are encouraged to keep the breeder informed as to how the birds are progressing with the training. This year’s futurity will be flown (weather permitting) November 10, 2001. It is open to flyers who live within a 40 mile radius from the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas. There are a number of flyers from area clubs that fly in the GSAF Futurity.
Please direct any questions to Vern Clausen at 830-931-3388 or e-mail Vern at hiflyer42@hotmail.com .

YOUNG BIRD AUCTION  –  Two dates have been set for the Young Bird Auction during the year 2001. The goal is increased participation in the auctions. Flyers may sell birds in both auctions, and the dates will allow time for the flyer to get birds ready for the auctions. The more the merrier!!!! The auction is more successful if birds are brought to the auction rather than bands for future hatches. Birds from these auctions will be flown in the first 300-mile, Young Bird  Race on October 22, 2000.

FOUR-WAY RACE Each flyer selects four birds to be flown from four different directions. One each from the North, South, East, and West. This is a form of a pre-season practice race. This gives the participating flyers an opportunity to insure their clocks are in working order, understand their duties with regard to the race chores, and all details of shipping night procedures.

TELEPHONE AUCTION Each WRPC member donates birds from their loft to be auctioned. The 2000 sale will include only young birds from the highest quality breeders in each of the respective lofts. This will allow a flyer to buy young birds that can be put on the race team and be flown in the YB season following the auction. The member will select a kit from his highest quality breeders. Some kits will be cross-bred and some will be straight-bred. This is an excellent opportunity to get good birds at a good price.

PIGEON SHOW  -- Each year Woodlawn Racing Pigeon Club has a pigeon show that is sanctioned by the Southern Racing Pigeon Association. In conjunction with the show an auction of donated birds is held. Club members and other pigeon breeders donate birds for this event. Lunch is furnished by the club members and their wives. The judges are provided by the Southern Racing Pigeon Association.

Dr. Ken Warren, Garland Wenner, and Craig Nidever have acted as judges for past shows.

The birds entered for the show are divided into four classes:

                              1)    DIPLOMA CLASS -- Proof of diplomas must be provided. Birds will be

classified  according to race distance, cock, hen, young bird, and old bird.
                  2)     FLOWN CLASS -- Birds are classified the same as in the Diploma Class.
                  3)     UNFLOWN CLASS -- Birds are classified according to color and sex.
                  4)     EYE CLASS -- Birds are classified according to age and sex.

Best Pair of the show will be awarded at the end of the show. Trophies will be awarded to the winner of each class. This show is attended by pigeon fanciers from all across the State of Texas. Even if you don't show or have pigeons, it is a great opportunity to view beautiful birds. The public is welcome.
